Mac Mavericks Version: Geometry Explorer Version 2.0.2 (Re-compiled 1/31/2014) On Macintosh computers running OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) there is a problem with installing the program from the web page http://homepages.gac.edu/~hvidsten/gex/download-2.0.2.html I have re-compiled the program with the latest Java (JRE 1.7) with the hope that this will solve the issue.
To try the program, download Geometry
Explorer as a zip file. Then, unzip the file. If you
have trouble unzipping the file I would suggest getting the UnArchiver
program and try to use that to unzip the file. It is on the Mac App
store. Info is at
https://itunes.apple.com/app/the-unarchiver/id425424353?mt=12&ls=1
Once the file is unzipped, you will see a folder called "GeometryExplorer". Within that folder, there is a file called "Geometry.jar". Double click on that file and the program should run. If it does not run, try the hints below.
Note that you have to have Java 1.7 installed for this to work. (Go to http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/java_mac.xml and download the latest version of Java if you are unsure of what Java you are running)
Note also that you must set the security settings of Java so that it will allow the program to run. Go to System Preferences under the Apple menu and click the Java button on the bottom. Set Java to the minimum setting. This setting will always prompt you before running Java applications.
Finally, note that you may have to adjust the
MACOSX Gatekeeper settings. This is a new Apple program to
protect Macs from untrustworthy programs. It is set by default to not
allow "unsigned" applications to run. To sign an application, the program
write needs to obtain a security certificate. The process of obtaining the
certificate is in the works, but until the program has that certificate,
you can still get it to run by going to Apple menu > System
Preferences… > Security & Privacy > General tab
and clicking on the "Anywhere" option when the "Allow Applications
downloaded from:" window appears.
I am working on a new installation program that will create a normal looking Mac OS application, and will have a security certificate so that one does not have to reset the Java and Apple Gatekeeper security settings, but in the mean time, this should work.
