Mad Forest

By Caryl Churchill, Directed by Amy Seham

It is Romania - before and right after the revolution that toppled the repressive Ceausescu regime. In flashes of insight, British playwright Caryl Churchill (Cloud 9, Top Girls) shows us scenes in the lives of two families - caught on opposite sides of the political fence - as they struggle with the changing "truths" of patriotism, love, and even reality itself. Mad Forest was written after the playwright, original director, and a group of student actors from London's Central School travelled to Romania to work with theatre students there. Their conversations with ordinary Romanian citizens became a part of this unique play, giving texture and humanity to a dramatic moment in history.
