Conflict, Social Justice, and Ethnic Relations in Ireland
January Term 2005

Tentative Course Overview

We will begin with three days on campus at Gustavus Adolphus College developing a basic understanding of the geography, history and vocabulary of Ireland. We will then journey to London to visit the seat of the British Empire and early colonizer of Ireland. After touring the city and seeing a play in the West End, we will journey to Dublin in the Republic of Ireland where will visit museums, see plays, visit schools, and learn about contemporary Irish art. We then move on to Belfast in Northern Ireland. Along the way we visit the ancient megalithic tomb of Newgrange and climb the Hill of Slane to the very spot where St. Patrick began his ministry. After visiting with artists and peacemakers on both sides of the sectarian divide in Belfast, we travel to walled-city of Derry (Londonderry) to meet with educators, artists and others working for social justice. On our way back to Dublin, we will stay at the Glencree Centre for Reconciliation, high in the Wicklow Mountains and gather our thoughts about the way literature, education, and the arts have been used in to establish Irish identity and their role in Irish contemporary struggles. The class will be highly interactive. Students will also participate in service-learning opportunities in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Time will be set-aside for individual travel in Ireland as well as reflection.
