GUSTAVUS VARSITY MEN BEGIN SEASON IN HAWAII

After five days of training at the Kiahuna Tennis Club in the Poipu Beach region of Kauai, the tennis team traveled to Oahu for matches against Hawaii Pacific University and Brigham Young University-Hawaii.  Both teams are highly ranked Division II teams that are dominated by international players with pro tournament experience.

The match against Hawaii Pacific was rained out on Thursday, February 7, but was rescheduled on Saturday, February 9.  The Gusties notched two out of three doubles victories, but only Mike Burdakin won his singles.  Both John Kauss and Andy Bryan lost tie breakers in close, hard fought matches.  Gustavus lost 6-3 in a dual match that could have gone either way.

The match against Brigham Young-Hawaii on February 8 also experienced rain.  Again the Gusties won two out of three doubles.  They were up 3-0 in two of the singles matches when rain ended play.  The other four matches were still even.

The Gusties returned home from Hawaii on February 10.  They host three teams on Saturday, February 16 at the Swanson Center on the Gustavus campus.  Gustavus opens MIAC conference play at 9 a.m. against Concordia, meets Division II opponent Winona State at 1:30 p.m., and later plays NAIA team Dordt College from Sioux Center, Iowa at 6:15 p.m.
