GUSTAVUS TENNIS MEN PREPARE FOR ITA/NCAA III NATIONAL INDOOR WITH PERFECT WEEKEND

Since returning from Hawaii the Gusties have been focused on their preparation for the national indoor tournament.  Gustavus first meets highly regarded Trinity University from San Antonio, TX.  The last time the two teams played was the NCAA III quarterfinal match in 2005.  Senior captain Andy Bryan was then a freshman, and his long three set match decided the outcome.  Andy rallied from being down two match points to clinch a thrilling 4-3 victory for the Gusties.

In the seven-year history of the ITA/NCAA III National Indoor Tournament the Gusties have won three times, Emory University twice, and University of California- Santa Cruz twice.  On Friday, February 22 defending champion UC-Santa Cruz (CA) meets Mary Washington University (VA) and Depauw University (IN) plays Washington University (MO) at 11:30 a.m. while Gustavus (MN) plays Trinity University (TX) and Emory University (GA) meets Johns Hopkins University (MD) at 5 p.m.  The winners play at 2 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday while the losers compete at 8:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Admission to all events is free.

On February 16 Gustavus split its varsity against three home opponents.  Nineteen varsity members secured 27 wins against no losses.   Division III Concordia from Moorhead, MN, Division II Winona State from Winona, MN, and NAIA Dordt College from Sioux Center, Iowa all suffered 9-0 defeats.  Gustavus heads into the national indoor tournament with a 3-1 record.
