GUSTAVUS WINS FOUR, COMPETES WELL AGAINST DRAKE U.

The Gusties split their team on a busy Saturday and emerged with four victories against tough Division III competition.  The first win was over Grinnell College, one of the top two teams in Iowa. The last three wins were MIAC opponents- U. of St. Thomas, St. John's University, and Macalester. These contests brought the season record to 13-1 and the MIAC conference mark to 5-0.  The next conference opponents will be Hamline, St. Olaf, and St. Mary's, all on April 5. 

On Sunday Gustavus traveled to Des Moines to play the powerful Drake University team, loaded with international players who currently have the longest undefeated home match record in the NCAA Division I- 33 consecutive victories.  This year they have defeated both the U. of Minnesota and the U. of Iowa and are rated #33 in Division I. 

The Gusties approached the doubles with confidence, winning at #2 with John Kauss and Mike Burdakin.  Drake took the next two doubles, although Ben Tomasek and Nick Hansen were close at #3 doubles.  In singles Ben and Mike lost in third set tiebreakers.  The final score was 7-0 for Drake, using the Division I scoring system where winning two out of three doubles counts one point.  The Gusties took consolation in a fine performance and the knowledge the score easily could have been 4-3.  

On Saturday, March 15 at 9 a.m. Gustavus hosts the U. of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked #7 in the region with victories over Luther and Grinnell.  At 6 p.m. the Gusties host St. Cloud State, the top Division II team in Minnesota.
