GUSTAVUS GOES 1-3 ON SPRING TRIP TO CALIFORNIA

The spring trip to California for the men's tennis team started on a winning note with a convincing 9-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer.  However, the next two matches against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and U. of Redlands, both top ten Division III opponents, were disappointing.  The Gusties managed to win only one out of six doubles matches.  Earlier success this season for Gustavus against UC-Santa Cruz, Emory, and Trinity, all top ten teams, depended on victories in eight out of the nine doubles matches.  A similar performance in doubles on the California trip could have produced two wins.

The Gusties lost a third match against NAIA #2 ranked Azusa Pacific, but the resurgence of strong doubles play proved encouraging.  Andy Bryan/Charlie Paukert and Mike Burdakin/John Kauss both won matches against the strongest teams they faced on the spring trip.   Also in singles Bryan and Paukert played their best tennis on the spring trip, both in tough losses.

The spring trip concluded with an intra squad singles tournament on the Pomona courts.  The team chose that location rather than Indian Wells so that they would have time to visit the Pepperdine campus in Malibu and watch the Harvard-Pepperdine tennis match.  Coach Kevin Whipple won the top flight, Charlie Paukert the second, Nick Hansen the third, Kyle Olson the fourth, and Song Thao the fifth.  In the superbreaker playoffs for the championship Paukert defeated Hansen and Olson defeated Thao.  Then Olson defeated Paukert for the right to play Whipple in the championship match.  Coaching experience prevailed, but both finalists received tennis merchandise from the Harvard tennis team.
