GUSTAVUS WINS MIAC CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP
Gustavus
men's varsity tennis clinched the MIAC championship for the 20th consecutive
year with a convincing 9-0 home victory over Carleton on Saturday. Both
teams had been undefeated in conference play this season, and Carleton
approached the match hoping for an upset. Those thoughts faded when the
Gusties swept the doubles with three convincing victories, followed by one
sided singles victories from #1 Andy Bryan, #2 John Kauss, and #6 Aaron Zenner.
Next the Gusties defeated Luther, currently the top ranked Division III team in
Iowa. The script for the 8-1 victory nearly paralleled the earlier
Carleton match. The Gusties swept the doubles and then got quick singles
victories from John Kauss and Aaron Zenner, giving the team a 5-0 lead and the
assurance of victory. Andy Bryan, Mike Burdakin, and Charlie Paukert all
had close matches, but each won, raising the lead to 8-0. Only Ben
Tomasek, whose singles match started later than the rest, lost a super breaker,
giving Luther their only point.
The third victory of the day came against Wartburg. Another 9-0 victory
raised the season record to 24-5. Only Kalamazoo, Michigan remains on the
Gustie schedule. Twelve team members travel to Milwaukee next weekend for
the annual showdown between two of the top Midwest teams. Both varsity
and junior varsity teams will play at the Pleasant Valley Indoor Club, managed
by former Gustavus star John Gambucci. The match time is 10 a.m. on
Sunday, April 20.
