GUSTAVUS  DEFEATS KALAMAZOO 5-4

Gustavus men's varsity tennis beat Kalamazoo College 5-4 on Sunday at the Pleasant Valley Club near Milwaukee.  For the past fifteen years these highly ranked teams have played at this neutral site half way between the schools.  The Gustavus victory marks their ninth consecutive win in the series.

John Kauss clinched the victory with a three set win at #2 singles.  That put the Gusties ahead 5-2.  Kalamazoo then narrowed the margin of victory with three set wins at both #5 and #6 singles.  The dual match marked the end of the regular season for Gustavus.  Their record is 25-5, and they remained undefeated in Central Region and MIAC conference play. 

On Friday and Saturday Gustavus hosts both the MIAC men and women's play off tournaments.  The top six teams from the conference standings qualify, and the winners receive automatic qualifying bids to the NCAA III tournament.  The Gustavus men play the winner of St. John's University and Bethel University at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Gibbs Courts.  The winner likely will face Carleton in the championship match at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
