The Hillstrom Museum of Art at Gustavus Adolphus College will host two new exhibitions from Monday, Nov. 24 to Friday, Jan. 30. Illusion and Certainty (Paintings by Martin Weinstein) will be on display concurrently with Come On!: American Posters from World War I. An opening reception will take place Nov. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Illusion and Certainty includes 50 paintings by New York artist Martin Weinstein. Many of his works are landscape depictions of Kenoten, a location in the Hudson River Valley where the artist often works. Weinstein’s artworks have been exhibited in many venues in the United States as well as abroad in Paris, Warsaw, and Edinburgh, and have appeared in publications including Art in America, ARTNews, and Arts Magazine.

Come On!: American Posters from World War I consists of 33 propaganda posters from the World War I era, on loan from the College archives. The exhibit considers the artistry of the images in the posters, as well as the political, historical, religious, and social background of each.

The exhibit was conceived by Laura Behling, an associate professor of English with an interest in the role of gender in the early twentieth century. Assisting her in the project was junior Chelsea Kramer, who, with Behling, was the recipient of a Gustavus Presidential Faculty-Student Collaboration Grant. The two collaborated with the Hillstrom Museum for the exhibition, writing the didactic texts, including their general essay for the brochure that accompanies the exhibit and the essay texts for the each of the 33 individual posters on view.

The Hillstrom Museum of Art is located on the lower level of the College’s C. Charles Jackson Campus Center. Regular museum hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays and 1-5 p.m. on weekends. The museum is free and open to the public.
