Short Essays for 3rd Test (one of the following questions
will be on the test):
- Explain what is meant by Apocalypticism as it pertains to
the Bible and how it developed. Include in your answer definitions
for "historical prophecy, prophetic eschatology, and apocalyptic
eschatology." Give examples from the following: a) Isaiah
or Amos; b) Jeremiah or Ezekiel; c) 2nd Isaiah, and d) Daniel.
- Briefly describe the historical context leading up the destruction
of Jerusalem in 587/6 BCE and the historical context leading
up to the destruction of Babylon and the restoration of the Israelites
to Jerusalem in 520 BCE.
- Describe what is meant by the Psalter, what issues are involved
in dating the Psalms, and how was the Psalter used in history
and how should it be used today. Include in your answer the division
of Psalms into books, a brief discussion of the six main form-critical
types, and a description of what is meant by "actualization."
- What is metaphor? What are some dangers and benefits of the
metaphors used in the Bible? Give at least two examples from
the Bible.
- How does a central prophet differ from a peripheral prophet?
Give 2 examples from at least 2 different centuries. You may
also give examples from the Mari texts.
