Introduction into Construct Chains
Biblical Hebrew does not have a preposition with the range of meaning conveyed by the English preposition "of." Likewise, Hebrew does not have a recognizable genitive case, so the "of-relationship" must be expressed in another way - it is expressed in Biblical Hebrew with the use of a construct chain. The construct chain looks almost identical to a string of absolute nouns, and only a few minor vowel reductions separate the absolute and construct forms. There are ten rules that serve to explain the vowel changes that take place in forming the construct forms. The ten rules are as follows:
