Longer essay (knowledge, understanding, and thinking question) for 2nd Test

Part One: Briefly describe the Mosaic and Davidic Covenants. (Hint: in your discussion of the Mosaic Covenant please include a discussion of parallel to the Suzerainity Treaty and how this parallel helps us understand this conditional covenant. In your discussion of the Davidic Covenant please include a discussion of how the presentation of the Davidic Covenant in 2 Samuel 7 is similar to the Noachic and Abrahamic Covenants.

Part Two: Explain how the Mosaic and Davidic Covenants play a major role in the Deuteronomistic History and are in tension with one another. (Hint: the Deuteronomistic History expands the idea of the conditional covenant: "if you do well, God will reward you." Yet, the historical books in the Deuteronomistic History and this conditional idea of God's involvement with Israel are held in tension with the unconditional promises to David and his descendants. Your answer should explain how this tension is significant and how it helps us understand the final form of the Deuteronomistic History.) Give several examples from different parts of the Deuteronomistic History.

Part Three: How does this tension between these conditional and unconditional convenants help us understand how Israelite history is "true" because it interprets the past for the present and the future and not because it presents a "factual" account of what happened. (Hint: in your answer, please feel free to refer to parallels and examples from the Pentateuch and Chronicles as long as these examples are related to the Deuteronomistic History.)
