Geology and Biology of the Southwest

Gustavus Adolphus College

January Term, 2006

Extraordinary smiles after an extraordinary backpacking trip in Grand Canyon.

Geology and Biology of the Southwest (Geo 210) is a one-credit J-term travel course offered biannually at Gustavus Adolphus College.  The trip focuses on the interrelationship of the geology and ecology of desert land systems.  Students spend one week on campus studying the geology of various landmarks in the southwest including the Guadalupe Mountains, volcanoes of New Mexico and Arizona, the Rocky Mountains and Grand Canyon, in addition to the ecology of the Chihauhaun and Sonoran Deserts.  The rest of J-term is spent in the field, where students complete field exercises, present the geology or ecology of a national park or monument and hike, camp and have fun!
