Painting is a method of asking questions. “Is this what I see? What do I remember? How do I feel about this experience?“

Ambiguity is an important element in the work. When I begin a painting with a subject that I can observe directly or just imagine many other influences become part of the process. The process maybe similar to driving a car through a rural landscape just after seeing a powerful film with an urban setting. The act of driving in the country is combined with the memory of the film. The two visual experiences are not literally merged, but do exist in the mind. Painting can make this kind of experience tangible. Multiple images can be present at the same time. This image is ambiguous because it encourages multiple readings with more than one finite subject.

Art, aviation, and auto racing are my areas of interest. Bringing these apparently diverse subjects together continues to be a fascinating challenge. The options for me have been to examine the two twentieth century machines, the automobile and aircraft, through the medium of paint on canvas: a traditional art medium begun in early Rennissance Europe. Early twentieth century artists recognized the similarity between the invention of machines and their own struggle to create a "modern art". Through my art I wish to revisit this relationship now at the beginning of the twenty-first century .
