US GOVERNMENT, SPRING 2009
CIGLER CHAPTER SYNOPSES: SCHEDULE &
INSTRUCTIONS
As your syllabus explains, ONCE during the semester, you will be responsible for giving the class a BRIEF (3 minutes) oral synopsis of one reading selection from the Cigler & Loomis book. You will get to choose the reading for your synopsis; sign-up will take place by Friday, February 27 (this is a little later than anticipated due to Chris being gone); the schedule is below.
You need to cover two points in each synopsis: 1) summarize the reading’s main point; 2) relate the reading to the class’s main topic – connect to key points we’ve previously discussed, how it relates to the O’Connor reading, what you find most interesting or relevant in the reading.
Everyone is responsible for reading these selections, not just the presenter, and everyone is expected to be able to answer the discussion questions that accompany each reading.
Your synopsis is due in written form at the end of the class period when you present. Papers should be no more than one typed, double-sided page (front and back), which is about 3 minutes worth of material. If you present but do not have the written version completed, the paper loses 20 points (out of 100) and could lose more if not turned in within 24 hours; failure to present on your assigned date will mean a 0.
EVALUATION CRITERIA: The main focus in grading you on this assignment is the content of what you say, which will carry far more weight than how well you present (although you should speak clearly and get your points across to the class effectively, too, without just reading your synopsis to us). I am looking for evidence that you understand what you read and that you have been thoughtful and diligent in connecting the reading to the main topic we are discussing. The written synopsis will be graded for content, not writing quality. You do not need to provide a citation to the chapter; however, if you choose to quote something from the chapter, the page number of the quote should be included in the written synopsis.
CHAPTERS, DATES FOR PRESENTATIONS
Choose the chapter you want and e-mail your choice to Chris;
preferences will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis (and this list will
be kept updated); sign up should be completed by Friday, February 27
