Definitions*





Mentoring - A trusting relationship with an experienced person (mentor) that provides inspiration and growth to another (mentee) and that works toward the common good (1/5; 3 pm).§
 
 
 

Community - A diverse group of people who interactively work toward a purpose (and) where all members offer acts of leadership and are accepted and respected.  Members share a common commitment, vulnerability, and a unifying spirit.
 
 
 

Mentoring Community -
1) A group of trusting individuals with a shared set of values where each person has the opportunity to grow and guide others to achieve more meaningful lives through respect, acceptance and equality.

2) A group of trusting individuals within a community where each person has the opportunity to grow and guide others to achieve more meaningful lives.
 
 
 
 

* The definitions expressed on this page are the result of the work of the NDL 207 Mentoring Community class, should be considered a work in progress, and are subject to change.

§ The class agreed, in order to help focus our definition, that mentoring with negative outcomes would be exluded from the definition and referance to such situations would be done using "negative mentoring."  Similarly, the class agreed to exclude single encounters between individuals that have a mentoring impact, focusing instead on relationships that endure through more than one encounter, and that reference to such encounters would be done using "mentoring moment."
