In 1991, both GZA and The RZA each put out two records.  To their disappointment, neither of their efforts found any success.  GZA went to his good friend known as The Ol’ Dirty Bastard and decided to form a hip-hop group with MCs from around Staten Island including Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God and Masta Killa.  ODB named the group The Wu-Tang Clan after a kung fu movie titled Shaolin and Wu Tang. The film featured the indestructible Wu Tang sword. 
The Clan was more than just music however.  They had made an agreement to support one another in all aspects of life, including financially.  The nine members were now joining a business rather than a hip-hop group.  Their goal was to dominate the hip-hop world in as profitable fashion as possible.  Instead of releasing only group albums, the members would branch off to solo acts after the group’s debut in search of further success.
The Wu-Tang Clan’s first album titled Enter the Wu-Tang: The 36 Chambers, the group found the immense success they were searching for.  The critically acclaimed album had a unique “hardcore” style that was heavily influenced by martial arts as well as the game of chess.  The 36 Chambers is often regarded as a top five all time hip-hop album.  After the debut album, the members ventured to solo success before releasing their sophomore album Forever. 
During the Clan’s illustrious career, they have reached platinum three times and gold on their fourth album.  The Clan recently released their fifth album in December of 2007, titled 8 Diagrams.
