FALL TERM 2010
PROF. ERIC J. CARLSON

This is a course on the history of England from its origins to the deposition of Richard II in 1399. This is a period distinguished by dramatic political change--the formation of the kingdom of England, the Norman Conquest, the baronial revolts that led to Magna Carta, the formation of parliament--as well as social cataclysm in the early 14th century--a devastating period of famine followed by the Black Death. It provides us with an opportunity to study how nations are formed (an issue today in American foreign policy), how Christianity developed its close bond with government in Europe (which affects it today, especially as Islam grows in western Europe), and how the foundation was laid for American social and political values and institutions.
