GROUP PLAY REHEARSALS THIS WEEK

1. Read pp. xi – xxiii of the Introduction to Segal’s Plautus: Four Comedies.  I recommend saving the three pages of the introduction that specifically treat The Braggart Soldier until after you have read the play itself, so that it doesn’t spoil the excitement of discovery.

2. Read Plautus’ The Braggart Soldier (i.e. Segal pp. 2-74), thinking about the following questions:

3. What does this play tell us about Roman slaves?

4. Who are the winners at the end of the play, and who are the losers?

5. What elements does Plautus carry over from Greek New Comedy?  What is new, and what is Roman about his play?  You may not be able to identify all Roman characteristics, but hazard an educated guess.

Preparation for Fri. Apr. 21

1. Your assignment for today is to meet as a group to rehearse your scene.
