Ekman,
Kerstin
Born 27 August 1933 in Risinge, Ekman
worked as a documentary film maker and teacher before becoming an
accomplished novelist. Her first seven books were crime fiction, but
after 1967 she left the genre to write in a variety of styles, often
combining historical fiction with feminist values. (One of her books, The Forest of Hours,
is a history of Sweden told from the point of view of a troll.) She
returned to crime fiction with Blackwater,
which won top prizes in Sweden for both best mystery and best work of
Scandinavian fiction. Her two works of crime fiction translated into
English have been published out of their original order.

A prolific writer, Lang earned
a PhD from the University of Stockholm in 1948 and taught school (also
serving as a headmistress) until 1974. She published 40 mysteries
featuring Puck Ekstedt and Inspector Christer Wijk as
as well as children's books and short stories. Though her crime fiction
is in the vein of traditional, even cozy village puzzles, they often
have sexual plot elements that made them unusually racy.

Mankell,
Henning
Born in Stockholm in 1948,
Mankell is the author of the Kurt Wallander series which has been
published in 33 countries. The first Wallander novel, Faceless Killers,
won the Glass Key from the Academy of Swedish Crime
Writers. In
addition to writing mysteries, non-crime novels, and children's books, he is a theatre
director, writer, and manager and a social activist, particularly on
behalf of his second home, Mozambique. The extraordinary
popularity of the Wallander series is often credited with opening the
US market to Swedish crime fiction. As with many other series, the
translations have been published out of order.

two authors also translated American crime fiction into English,
