MCS 121 Test 1

This will be a closed-book test, so make sure you have the essential elements of the mathematics of functions committed to memory.

You may use a calculator for numerical and graphical purposes.

This test will have problems related to the topics we have covered in our study of Chapter 1, A Library of Functions:

1. Functions and change
2. Exponential functions
3. New functions from old
4. Logarithmic functions
5. Trigonometric functions
6. Powers, polynomials, and rational functions

Suggested exam study tactics

• Look over your old homework assignments. Answers are available on the web and outside my office.
• Look over worksheets and in-class exercises.
• Do a few of the unassigned review problems at the end of the chapter. Answers are posted outside my office.
• For each section of the text that will be covered on the exam, write a paragraph in your own words that describes the main ideas in the section, why these ideas are important, and how you can use the ideas to solve problems.
