Calculus II: Exam 1

Exam 1 is scheduled for Monday evening, October 2.
You have a choice of two sessions: 5:30-7:25 in Olin 103 or 7:30-9:25 in Olin 320/321.

Exam 1 will cover Chapter 7 (all sections): Integration.
This exam will consist of problems and questions regarding techniques of integration. It is primarily a skills test. You should be prepared to demonstrate your ability to calculate integrals accurately and efficiently.

Exam 1 will have two parts.

Part 1 must be done without any aids: no calculator, no tables, no note card. You should have memorized the basic integral formulas (1-7 in the back of the text), and you should be able to do substitution and integration by parts without having the formulas provided.

Part 2 will allow you to use your calculator and a 3"-by-5" note card with anything you want handwritten on it. You will be provided with a table of integrals, but it will not include I. Basic Functions, formulas 1-7. You should be able to write out the form of the partial fraction expansion of any given rational function with already factored denominator, and you should also be able to determine the constants in the partial fractions representation of a proper rational function having only linear factors in the denominator, in simple cases.

Techniques and topics

Review problems: Review the homework and problems worked in class. Try some of the odd-numbered review exercises at the end of the chapter.

A previously given chapter 7 exam may be approximated by the following problems:
7.1: #77; 7.2: #39; 7.5: #9; 7.6: #2; 7.7: #14; 7.8: #2, 28
Review Exercises: 3, 15, 23, 58, 64, 75, 76, 116, 156
Solutions for these problems are be posted outside my office.
