Exercise 1.26 (IPS 4/e):  Stemplot and histogram

“The Degree of Reading Power (DRP) test is often used to measure the reading ability of children.  Here are the DRP scores of 44 third-grade students, measured during research on ways to improve reading performance:

            40  26  39  14  42  18  25  43  46  27  19

            47  19  26  35  34  15  44  40  38  31  46

            52  25  35  35  33  29  34  41  49  28  52

            47  35  48  22  33  41  51  27  14  54  45

Make a stemplot of these data.  Then make a histogram.  Which display do you prefer; and why?  Describe the main features of the distribution.”

            Entering data into a list

            STAT                           EDIT

            1                                  Edit

            Arrow keys                  Highlight L1

            CLEAR                        Clears list L1                Not necessary if list is already clear.

            ENTER

            40                                Enter the

            ENTER                        data

            ENTER                        the exercise

            And so on                    above.

            Sorting a list

            (To save the original list, do, e.g.:  2nd [QUIT] 2nd [L1]  STO  2nd [L6].)

            STAT

            2                                  SortA(

            2nd [L1]

            )

            ENTER                        SortA(L1) sorts list L1 in increasing order.

            STAT

            1

            Down arrow key          Scroll down to see the sorted list.

                                                It’s easy to make your own stemplot from this list.

            Histogram settings

            WINDOW                   opens WINDOW setting menu

            Use number and arrow keys to make

                        Xmin=10          Minimum X value, a number < smallest datum

                        Xmax=60         Maximum Xvalue, a number > largest datum

                        Xscl=5             X scale, the width of a histogram interval

                        Ymin=0            Minimum Y value—should be 0 for histograms.

                        Ymax=9           Maximum Y value--make >= maximum frequency.

                        Yscl=1             Y scale

                        Xres=1             X resolution

            2nd STAT PLOT           2nd Y=

            1                                  for Plot1 settings

            Highlight On
