Introduction to Asian American Literature, Fall 2006
Presentation guidelines

In your term paper, you are arguing for the importance of a particular novel, play, collection of poems or autobiography for those who are interested in Asian American Literature. The presentation is a chance to convince an audience that they should read this book.

In the presentation, I expect you to communicate both enthusiasm and expertise. Because of the limited amount of time (5 minutes per person), you will not be able to discuss everything in your term paper or simply read it as-is. Instead, limit yourself to only a few significant, interesting points. Feel free to be creative, write on the board, use handouts, etc. – whatever you can do within the time allotted is fine with me. I will prefer presentations that are delivered extemporaneously over those written in advance and read. (If you do write something out in advance, keep in mind that it usually takes about two minutes to read one double-spaced page of type.) Whether you’re reading or extemporizing, practice the whole presentation, out loud, at least once before class.

If you have been assigned a partner, please meet with that person to plan a joint presentation. I would like each of you to speak for about five minutes, but to coordinate with each other so that you don’t repeat each other, but instead have the opportunity to get into more detail with the book. Your collaboration can take any form as long as you’re sharing the work about 50-50.
