Ethnic American Literature, spring 2008
Essay #1
Due in class March 3
Choose one:
- In the introduction to The Promised Land, Mary Antin suggests a number of explanations for
writing her autobiography – it will serve to illustrate “a multitude of statistical facts” (2), but its
writing also seems to serve a psychological purpose for the author. Choose one interesting and important
reason Antin has (whether stated or implied) for writing her story, and explain how that reason affects
the book.
- Although the book is primarily about its author, others play significant roles in the story as well.
Comment on Antin’s portrayal of her mother, her father, or her sister Fetchke/Frieda.
- Antin has been criticized for creating an overly positive view of the United States. Do you agree with
this criticism? Why or why not?
This essay should be 2-3 full pages, double spaced, paginated, with normal margins and font (Times New
Roman, size 12, is standard). Do give your essay a title. Although this essay will probably not require
any reading beyond the primary text, you should document all sources (including the primary texts) in
accordance with MLA style. Keep in mind that I do not accept late papers, and plan accordingly.
