Research Interests
I am an environmental chemist studying the fate and transport of mercury and organic contaminants in the environment, particularly aquatic environments. My two main study sites are Voyageurs National Park and the Marcell Experimental Forest. Please see the above links in the table to find out more details on these projects. At Marcell we are adding an acid rain constituent (sulfate) to a wetland to demonstrate the synergistic effects of mercury and sulfate deposition on the conversion of mercury to its toxic and bioaccumulative form, methylmercury. At Voyageurs we are examining factors that have led to high, but variable levels of mercury in fish inhabiting interior park lakes.
I am always looking for enthusiastic students interested in pursuing research projects or independent studies. Please contact me at x6235 or by e-mail (jjeremia)
