Project #1 Guidelines                        (Final Project Guidelines)

This project is on electrical use and energy conservation at Gustavus.  You will be examining electrical use in a dormitory building or other campus building.  I would suggest working on the dorm that you live in if data is available; or if you live off campus choose another building on campus.  You may work in groups of up to three.  This is a data-intensive project.  You must collect some of your own electrical usage data and download data from the internet.  A short paper and a PowerPoint (~7-8 minute) presentation must be turned into the instructor.  The requirements of the paper are as follows:

Requirements:

  1. 1500 words (~5 pages in length, not including figures and bibliography - double spaced, Times, Arial, or similar font)
  2. Introduction, Discussion, and Conclusion section headings must be included.
  3. The Introduction section must include the following:  A description of the building, the source of electricity at Gustavus, a very brief description of problems posed by electrical use at Gustavus.  The introduction should be no longer than one page
  4. The Discussion Section is the bulk of your paper and must include assessment of your collected and downloaded data, a breakdown of electrical use in the building, examples of what other colleges are doing to conserve electricity, specific recommendations for for your building, and the emissions that Gustavus would avoid if your recommendations were implemented.
  5. The Conclusion section should be less than one page and summarize the main points of your paper.  Do not introduce new ideas in the conclusion section.
  6. Figures and tables should NOT be embedded in the text - include them as separate pages after the bibliography.
  7. At a minimum, you must include figures or tables that address the following:  1) Percent of electrical use in your building due to computers, lighting, appliances, and any other major electrical usage; 2) Hourly trends in electrical use in your building; 3) Longer-term trends in electrical use (these might not be available)
  8. Minimum of 5 references - for this project the majority of references will be from web sites, if you can find appropriate book and journal references that would be great. Click here for guide to citing references.
  9. Selection of building and graph of electrical usage data is due on March 2 (please e-mail or hand in at class)
  10. An outline with cited references is due March 9 (automatic 10-point deduction for a missed deadline)
  11. Final due date for the paper and PowerPoint is March 16 (late papers are not accepted).
  12. Papers and PowerPoint presentations may be sent to jjeremia@gac.edu or turned in at class
  13. The paper and presentation combined are worth 100 points.
