Over the years, Gustavus Adolphus College has proposed a variety of plans for its campus. Some have been put into action, while others were simply hopes for the future of Gustavus. The campus has suffered fires and tornados that have changed the way it appears today. Below are proposed and actual plans from various years since 1945.

1945 proposed plans: In 1945, many buildings on campus existed including: Uhler Hall, The Field House, Auditorium, Old Main, Administration Building, First Gymnasium, Power Plant, Rundstrom Hall, Library, Stadium, Men’s and Women’s dormitories, and Johnson Hall.  There were many proposed plans involving an airport in the Northwest part of campus, 8 new unassigned buildings on the South End, a proposed warehouse and union, a Chapel, as well as an expansion to the library.

2009 Campus Map: Over ten years after the tornado, it is evident a large amount of buildings were lost and many new structures were added to the campus including College View Apartments, Arbor View Apartments, International Center, Hollingsworth Field and others. There was a large development of roads and parking throughout the campus.

1948 Actual Aerial View: After three years, the campus did not follow through with many of its proposed plans.  The campus contained stadium housing for married veterans. They added a college book store, little theatre and fine arts building on the north end.  A canteen and campus dining area were added near Uhler Hall.  The campus did add an extension to the Library.

1949 Proposed Plan: The south side of campus is expanding. There were unassigned buildings in these plans. The campus had a proposed Science Building, Chapel, and another dormitory to the west of Uhler.

1958 Aerial View: The war veteran housing is turned into a parking lot and more construction continues. A new Health Service Area was added but the campus seems to be planning for new additions in the 60’s like Nobel Hall, Gibbs, Norelius Hall, Christ Chapel, Pittman, Sohre Hall, Vickner Hall and more.
1992 Campus Map: Ring road is built partially due to the construction of Lund Center. One can see the large amount of buildings on campus prior to the tornado of 1998 that destroyed many structures on campus including Johnson Hall, Exchange House, Holly House, South Hall, Pine House, Brick House, Sjostrom House, Swedish House, Terrace House and more. There were additons to campus including many houses, dormitories, the Arboretum, Food Service Building, Interpretive Center,Lund Center, Nobel Hall and others.
