Inactive Fraternities

Chi Iota Kappa was founded in 1907 as a forensics society called the Chieftain Council. They were renamed in 1924 to Chi Iota Kappa, but still held on to the nickname “Chieftains.”

Alpha Phi Alpha was founded in 1995 as a Black fraternity hoping to be nationally affiliated, but were canceled after the application to be nationally chartered was rejected.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Shortened to SAE, the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded at Gustavus in 2007. The colors of SAE are purple and gold. SAE is the only national fraternity at Gustavus.

Tau Psi Omega

Nicknamed the Reds, the fraternity Tau Psi Omega was founded at Gustavus on October 3, 1904. The color associated with the Reds is cheerful red. The events that the reds are involved in include: The Theta/Red Christmas Banquet, Spring Recruitment, weekly social events, Canned Goods Drive and Fall & Spring Banquet. Tau Psi Omega is the oldest and most diverse fraternity at Gustavus.

Phi Alpha

Nicknamed the Alphs, the fraternity Phi Alpha was founded at Gustavus in 1907. The two colors that symbolize the Alphs are brown and gold. Some events that the Alphs participate in include: the food drive, Special Olympics, Fall Banquet and a spring campout.

Nu Upsilon Gamma

Nicknamed the Greys, the fraternity Nu Upsilon Gamma was founded at Gustavus in 1906. The designated colors of the Greys are maroon and grey. The events that the Greys support include: Spring & Fall Banquet, canned food drive, weekly social events, Adopt-A-Highway and the annual “Grillin’ with the Greys”.
