In this course we explore the setting in which most of the U.S. population and about half of the world's people live:  the urban setting.  Throughout history, urban areas have been the centers of economic, political, and cultural life.  Further, many of the critical issues in our society, racial segregation, environmental degradation, traffic congestion, poverty, and economic restructuring, are concentrated in Americas urban areas. In this course we will be concerned with the forces that give rise to cities and shape urban spaces.  We will also examine individual experiences and social interaction within urban spaces, and the meanings embedded in the built urban environment.  We will use diverse methodologies to broaden our understanding of urbanization and urban settings, and will pay particular attention to urban issues in Southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities.
