Working with the Directory Structure on a Linux Workstation

Following are some tasks which will help you learn how to view and manipulate the directory structure using the windowing system on the Linux computers.

• View your home directory.

  There are many ways to open a file browser to your home directory. The easiest is to click on the picture of a house along the toolbar .

• Add some sub-directories (also known as folders) to your home directory.

  Rather than storing all the files you create directly in your home directory, it is much better to organize the files in subdirectories. For example, you can create a subdirectory called ``MCS-177'' for this course by clicking on the file menu then new and folder from the submenu. You will then be asked to give the new directory name, which should be MCS-177.

• Change the file viewer to the MCS-177 subdirectory and create a subdirectory called ``Lab0.''
  Simply click the MCS-177 directory to enter it, then create a subdirectory as above.
