January Experience 2009
ARGENTINEAN CULTURE AND IDENTITY
Buenos Aires and Santa Fe
January 5 - 29, 2009
Instructors: Nancy Hanway and María Isabel Kalbermatten
Caminito. Barrio La Boca. Buenos Aires
Puente Colgante. Ciudad de Santa Fe de la Vera Cruz
In January of 2009 you could travel to Argentina to study the culture and history of this fascinating South American country. A nation that identifies itself culturally with the gaucho, the cowboy of the pampas and with the haunting strains of the tango, Argentina's past contains fascinating contradictions which can be seen in present day life and art. Through readings, museum visits, architectural tours, concerts, dance performances, and lectures we will examine how Argentina sees itself as a nation. This course will be taught in English. Students will complete daily readings and submit a reflective journal about the readings, lectures, and performances. There will be a final 5-page research paper, due upon return to Gustavus.
Argentinean Culture and Identity is intended for all Gustavus students, of any level. No Spanish is required to enjoy this J-Term Experience in South America. Advanced Spanish students may choose to complete readings in Spanish, and to pair up with a local Argentinean student for a language exchange.
