Suggestions for Journal Writing
Your entries should demonstrate that you have read the assigned material
and that you are critically analyzing the information discussed (applying
research findings to your own personal experiences, analyzing the assumptions
you hold that inform your opinions, analyzing how your perspective differs
from the author's and from others that you know.) Use the following
questions to help you focus your entries:
Entries on Assigned Readings:

What are the major topics discussed in the readings?

Are you surprised by the research findings cited in the text? Why
or why not?

How is the material relevant to your life experience?

Does the material challenge any of your old opinions or does the material
challenge you to form any new opinions?

What questions do you still have about the material?
Entries on Class Discussion:

What were the major topics of discussion?

Was the topic more emotionally relevant to some participants? How
did this affect the course of the discussion or your understanding of the
topic?

What statement(s) did you most agree with during the discussion?
Why?

What statement(s) did you most disagree with during the discussion?
Why?

Have your views on the issue changed? If so, how?

How would you describe your participation in the discussion?

Are there things you wish you had or had not contributed during the discussion?

How would you describe the participation of others (classmates or the instructor)?

How might you want to revisit or reframe this issue for the next discussion?
