Blake Camp Acoma

I have worked for The Blake School's summer camp, Camp Acoma, for four years now.  When I started, I was just an assistant in the pool, but over time I have worked my way up in the ranks.  This past summer I was the Aquatics Director and also directed the P.M. Extended Day Program.  I have loved this job because it combines two of the greatest joys that I have in my life, swimming and working with kids.

At Camp, I get every group of the campers in the pool at some time durring every day.  I get them in groups by their age.  I have to start out every camp session testing the kids to see what levels they are at so that I know how to teach them properly.  Although not every day is filled with lessons, I do try to teach the kids much of the content of the Red Cross Lessons (I am WSI certified).  This is somewhat of a challenge for me.  I get kids of all different ability levels and I try to figure out what and how I can teach them something useful in the water.

The time that I have spent working at Camp has really taught me a lot and showed me things I had never seen before.  I believe that Camp has played a big role in my decision to be an education major.  I love the impact that I have on a child's life.  There is nothing greater than teaching a child something and getting that look from them that they know that they have succeded and you helped them.  At Camp we also have a scolarship program, so I have interacted with some children that never would have affected my life in Edina.  There have been several children from other countries (Tanzania and Spain) and a couple children from the inner city that taught me through their love and stories.  I thank Camp, the staff, and the children for much of who I am now.
