Notes about the Proposed Major

At today’s meeting we discussed the Strategic Plan and a possible LALACS major. The meeting minutes are available if you click here or on our main page).

Below is a shorthand version of the meeting -- outlining our discussion of what a possible major in LALACS might look like, with our existing courses. Please give your input!

The four areas we devised have to do with the number of courses we have currently. So we want students to get a variety of courses, but it would be difficult to demand that they take the one Geography or Poli Sci course, since they are not offered every semester. That is the reason for the grouping of Religion / Soc Anthro / Geography/ Poli Sci.

Discussion of Possible Major in LALACS

We discussed having four different areas (based on courses we have now.)
1.	Language & Literature
2.	History
3.	Religion/ Soc Anthro /Geog/ Poli Sci
4.	Arts

Other requirements:
Capstone course with Senior Thesis
Immersion Experience

Each student would have to declare an area of concentration in which they would take 3 courses. They would then take 1 course from each of the three other concentration areas; do the capstone course, and the immersion experience (field study). And would have to demonstrate proficiency in a Latin American Language equivalent to Spanish 250 (Composition).

Needs: Capstone Course plus -- in order to make this an actual LALACS major, we need to have a line in Latino Studies, in Brazilian Studies, in Caribbean Studies. We are lacking in these areas.
