Motion made and accepted, minutes were approved. 2) Discussion of proposed GAC program in Argentina presented last spring by LALACS. Carolyn OGrady provided some basic definitions and the discussion started with with some review of the original discussions from last year. Possible drawbacks were brought up. The similarities of proposal with HECUA program in Ecuador were revisited, but after discussion, it was concluded that programs are really not competing directly. Target participants were identified as basically all students interested in globalization,business and social justice issues, among others. Carolyn shared some data regarding the students that go abroad most often (Social Sciences and Humanities). She offered a breakdown of destinations from 2005/2006 through 2008/2009. Some basic facts about a GAC study abroad program were brought up, such as minimun number of students and the possibility of offering two tracks: Mostly English or mostly Spanish. - Jeffrey Rathlef offered his opinion based on the SIT model that he is familiar with and mentioned that being such a different model from GACs, it was hard to make parallels but warned that Argentina can be tricky when dealing with independent contractors and mentioned what they did at SIT to avoid pitfalls. Basically, the semester program would consist of 4 classes: one in English, taught by the programs director, one language class (Spanish) and two content courses that could conceivably be taught in English or Spanish. An important step in the near future would be identifying possible providers in Argentina to teach the content classes and the language classes. Partnering with a local university would present advantages and disadvantages. In the past, Universidad del Litoral had approached Marisa with interest in an exchange program. Although this is not what its desired at this point, a partnership with this university could be explored. Marisa and Nancy will be exploring possibilities while in Argentina during J-term next January. The issue of the programs courses complying with Gen Ed requirements was discussed.
