    Course Description

Room and Times: See Profesora Hanway's current schedule, on her home page.

    Required texts:
Olivella de Castells, et al. Mosaicos, with accompanying lab manual and workbook.

Welcome to Beginning Spanish. This course is equivalent to the two first semesters in a sequential program in Spanish language. You will study basic grammar and vocabulary, and you will begin to learn about Hispanic culture. Most importantly, you will develop basic proficiency in speaking, listening, and writing in Spanish. Student participation – and the studying and writing you do at home – play a vital role in the class. This is a work-intensive class that will require a great deal of homework outside of class in order for you to be successful.

    Requirements and Grading

    Grade Breakdown:
Class participation and Homework – 30%
    Lessons Tests – 20%
    Vocabulary Quizzes - 10%:
    Short Quizzes - 7%:
    Short Tests – 16%
    Final Exam – 15%

Class participation and Homework: 30% of grade.
A course that stresses communication is only as strong as the contributions of individual members. That means that your fellow classmates and your professor depend upon you to come to class prepared and ready to participate actively.

    Participation
Your participation is graded by the following criteria:
Preparedness, study of grammar and vocabulary, active communication, active participation in groups, and use of Spanish in the classroom. Most emphasis is given to language use: you should speak exclusively in Spanish in the classroom.

Based on the above criteria, you will earn a grade from 0-4:
0=absent, totally unprepared, or refuses to participate
1=mostly unprepared, uses English frequently, participates grudgingly
2=minimal preparation, uses English occasionally, passive learner (i.e. pays attention but does not participate unless called on)
3=well prepared, almost never uses English, participates actively, occasionally
    demonstrating leadership in group work
4=very well prepared, never uses English, always participates, and is a leader in
    group work.

    Homework
The homework is designed to complement your study, to diagnose problems, and to give you practice in listening and writing. Homework will be checked in class, and will be collected at random. This class requires a great deal of work outside of the classroom. In order for you to gain a good base in Spanish it is necessary to keep up with homework. Only completed homework will receive credit. Late homework is never accepted, since we go over it in class on the date due. Learning vocabulary and grammar on the date due is part of your homework and participation grade. Depending on the progress of the class, I may assign extra homework at any time.

There are tutors assigned by the department to help you with your homework who are available 5 nights a week (Sunday through Thursday). Place: Culpeper Center
The tutor schedule will be posted at the beginning of each semester.

    Lessons Tests: 20% of grade
The chapters in Mosaicos are called "Lecciones" or "Lessons." There will be four lessons tests during the semester. Each test will cover all grammar, cultural lessons and vocabulary from two particular lessons – as well as any material we covered in class – and will take the entire class period. (The final three chapters [8, 9, and 10] will be covered on the Final Exam.) There will be a listening section, a short composition, cultural questions and grammar exercises on every test. The dates of tests can be found on the course schedule.

    Quizzes: 35% of grade
Vocabulary - 10%: There will be four quizzes on the vocabulary, each quiz corresponding to two Lessons. The vocabulary for the last three chapters will be on the final exam.
These will take about 15 minutes of class time. On these quizzes you should be prepared to write from memory, spelling all words correctly.
Short quizzes - 7%: there will be seven short vocabulary quizzes given during the semester. These quizzes may cover any assigned vocabulary, whether we have gone over it in class or not. You should be prepared to write from memory, spelling all words correctly.
Short Tests – 16% There will be eight short tests, which may cover any assigned material in the book, whether we have gone over the material in class or not, or any material we covered in class. You should be prepared to write from memory, spelling all words correctly. These will take about 15 minutes of class time.

Final Written Exam: 15% of grade
The final exam is cumulative. However, it will focus most heavily on the final three chapters that we cover in class.

    POLICIES

    ATTENDANCE POLICY
This class moves quickly and your attendance is essential to your success. You may take a maximum of two unexcused absences. For each absence (excused OR unexcused) you must write a 250-word paper in Spanish that goes over material we missed in class. I will be glad to help you with the form of the paper, although the work must be your own. The paper is due within one week of the absence. There are no exceptions to this policy: this includes absences for sports, choir, medical reasons, etc. If you choose not to write the paper a half-grade (+ or -) will be deducted from your next exam for every absence paper missed. Please do not miss quizzes, tests or exams because of an unexcused absence. You will NOT be able to make up quizzes, tests or exams for any personal reason. PLEASE NOTE THAT THREE LATE ARRIVALS COUNT AS ONE ABSENCE.

    EMAILING THE PROFESSOR: nhanway@gustavus.edu
I am happy to answer your emails and will do so as promptly as possible. If I do not answer you as quickly as you would like, please remember that I have over fifty students every semester: in other words, don’t leave your questions for the last minute!

ENGLISH: You will speak no English in class, with the exception of those few moments when you have a specific grammar question to ask. If I feel that you can compose the question in Spanish, I will ask you to do so. While this may seem frustrating, it will help you – as much as any other component of the class – to learn to speak Spanish with some fluency. If you speak in English in class, your grade WILL be lowered considerably. There is no exception to this rule.

EXTRA ASSIGNMENTS: Extra assignments may be added at any time, for any reason (although it will always be pedagogical -- to help you learn more about language and/or culture). Extra assignments are usually added during the semester due to special events that have to do with Spanish or Latin American culture. If you cannot attend the event due to scheduling problems, an alternate assignment will be given.

    EXTRA CREDIT:
Extra credit assignments are never given for any reason.

EXTRA HELP: the department provides tutors five days a week to help you with questions regarding grammar, vocabulary and homework. While they cannot do your work for you, they are an excellent aid if you feel stumped or simply would like some extra support. If I see that you are struggling, I may ask you to see the tutor for help on a specific point of grammar or with pronunciation. The tutors can be found in Culpeper Language Lab (first floor, Vickner). The schedule will be posted during the first few weeks of the semester.

If you find you are feeling frustrated by the course, the workload, by something that is going on in class, or by your own lack of enthusiasm, please let me know. My goal is to help you learn Spanish and Hispanic Culture as well as possible – and frustration shows that there is an obstacle to learning. You will find me a supportive and non-judgmental listener with many years of experience in helping students overcome such moments (or semesters!)

FINAL EXAM: The date and time of the final exam will be posted on the web.

    FINDING THE PROFESSOR:
If you need to find me at the last minute, check out my web page for my schedule to see when I have other classes or (of course) just come to office hours. If office hours are inconvenient for you, let me know in class and we can arrange a time that is better for you.

GRADING SCALE: Letter grades will be assigned according to the following scale:
    A 100-94%
    A- 94-90%
    B+ 89-87%
    B 86-83%
    B- 82-80%
    C+ 79-77%
    C 76-73%
    C- 72-70%
    D+ 69-67%
    D 66-63%
    D- 62-60%
    F 59 and below

HOMEWORK: As this is an accelerated language class you will have a great deal of homework. As such, homework is a huge part of your grade. Homework is listed on the date that it is due. Homework is checked every day, and – along with class participation – is worth 30% of your total grade for the semester. Late homework is never accepted, since we go over it in class on the date due. Learning vocabulary and grammar on the date due is part of your homework and participation grade.

SUCCESS: To be successful in this class you will need to 1) be prepared for class every day 2) participate actively 3) be a leader in group work 4) study on a daily basis 5) speak only in Spanish in the classroom.

    WORKLOAD
Please look carefully at the workload for this class and be sure that you understand how much it will entail. As this is an accelerated college level class, the workload is set at a high level. If you plan to achieve an excellent grade, plan for at least an hour of homework every night.
