How to Prepare for Your Advising Appointment

1. Make your advising appointment in advance of registration

2. Look at your grade audit and determine which courses you need.

3. Match the list of courses you need against the course catalog (see "Catalog" in the index above). Be sure to find out when the course is taught. Many courses are only taught during particular semesters (example: Spring semester, even years). This is particularly significant if you plan to study abroad. If you are registering for a semester in which you will study abroad, your advisor will work with you to find courses that match the courses you might miss on campus.

4. Every semester, it is useful to plan your course-load during the rest of your time at Gustavus, in order to find any conflicts you may have because of other requirements. Sometimes you may have to go back and forth between two advisors if you have two majors. Give yourself time.
