Aeneid I.462

The Aeneid is pivotal in western culture.  Because Vergil incorporated Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey into a Roman epic of equal monumentality, the Aeneid sums up the history of classical civilization.  This eloquent marriage of the Greek and Roman cultural and literary traditions has become arguably the most influential poem in western civilization.  Its story, style and attitudes have influenced arts and letters for over 2000 years.  It is perhaps the supreme example of what is meant by a classical work; that is, one in which even the smallest unit reflects the structure and thought of the whole and whose unity balances opposites.
