Deed of Donation

(Vol. IV, No. 2 -- Fall 2000)
Mark Lance, of Georgetown University, sends us a different kind of memorial marker.
He writes:

I travelled to a conference in Slovenia this summer and came upon the deed of donation for the region. Of particular philosophical interest, I thought, was the phrase “with everything that can be given a name.” Was Henry “the invincible king” an incipient substitutionalist? Or is this some limitation on property rights—“If it’s unnameable, I’ll let you keep it.”
