INTRODUCTION AND CHAPTER 1: NOTATION

WEDNESDAY: Welcome to the Course; Syllabus on web at http://www.gustavus.edu/~rrichard. LetÕs get to know each other. Introduce Music Lab equipment. Learn class procedures and routines.  The Staff, Letter Names, Clefs, Ledger Lines, Octave Identification (we will use Fig. 1.9, middle C is C4), Accidentals, Enharmonic equivalents, half-step motion. Do problems from 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 in class

FRIDAY: Notation of duration - ties and dots, rhythm, meter signatures - simple, compound and asymmetric, syncopation Do problems from 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9, 1.E in class.  Explain Rhythm Composition Assignment

CHAPTER 2: SCALES, TONALITY, KEY, MODES

MONDAY: Hear Rhythm compositions Go over 1.E and 1.F - in class

Notation Topics Review and discussion of how music notation communicates to the performer, what it looks like, what it means, and where one goes to find out what is meant by a symbol/term or how to write it.  Go over 1.L in class.

WEDNESDAY: Scales, Pitch Class, Diatonic Scales, Major and Minor Scales, Key Signatures Do problems from 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 in class.

FRIDAY:  Scale Degree Names, Relative and Parallel Scales/Keys, Circle of Fifths Do problems from 2.5 and 2.6 in class.

 

TEXT ASSIGNMENTS

MONDAY: DUE Rhythm Composition: In handwritten manuscript, write 8 measures of rhythm.  Create 4 measures of rhythms in 3/4 or 4/4 meter.  Each measure must be different. We will perform these in class as a call and echo.  You will turn in your manuscript for grading at the end of class.

DUE Textbook Finish 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8, 1.9

WEDNESDAY: have read Chpt. 2 - p. 27-35: Do Test Yourself in Workbook for Chapter 1.

FRIDAY: have read Chpt. 2 - p. 35--40: DUE Wkbk. 2.A, 2.D, 2.E

 MEMORIZE the order of sharps, the order of flats, and all the major key signatures.

FRIDAY:   Chapter 3 Ð Intervals, Inversion of Intervals, Simple and Compound,  Do problems from 3.4 - 3.9 in class.  Introduction to Transposition.

MONDAY: Intervals. Do 3.3, 3.4, and 3.10 in class Transposition - students bring transposing instruments to class, show Finale transposing set up. Do 3.8, 3.9 and 3.10 in class

WEDNESDAY:   Transposition exercise using melody and Finale. Do problems from 3.11, 3.12 in class.

FRIDAY:  Chapter 4 Ð What is harmony?  Chord, Triad, Triad Root, different types of triads and chord structures; functional Roman Numberal Analysis Symbols (RNAS) for root position triads, Do selected problems from 4.1 Ð 4.6 in class.

TEXT ASSIGNMENTS

MONDAY: have read Chapter 3 Ð p.  55-60; DUE Wkbk. 3.A (do problems in vertical "5s" and "6s" columns); DUE Wkbk. 3.B, 3.C (#1 - 10, 21, 22, 23)

WEDNESDAY: DUE Wkbk 3.D (m1-2 only, ignore instructions 3,4,5), 3.E (m1-8 only), 3.G (use the piano to check yourself). 

Notate a well-known melody (approx. 8 measures) and then transpose it to another key.  Hand in for grading.

FRIDAY:   DUE  Wkbk 3.H (do the first measure only), 3.I done by hand; 3.L use Finale . These you will turn in for grading and correction. Do test yourself Chapter 3.  Have read Chapter 4 p. 73-74 and 78.

No Class Tues. or Wed. - Attend Nobel Conference Sessions. ATTEND THE NOBEL CONCERT Ð do worksheet related to the music you will hear.

MONDAY: Triad Inversions, Scale Degree Names, Primary Triads, Roman Numeral Analysis Symbols (RNAS) for Inverted Triads (just memorize them, figured bass will be discussed soon); Seventh Chords, RNAS for Inverted Chords (If time, start working on 4.B in class using RNAS) do 4.7 - 4.8 in class

FRIDAY:  Figured Bass Do 4.9 and  4.K in class

WEDNESDAY:  DUE Wkbk 6.2 Ð pick one melody to write a modified repeated phrase, a parallel phrase and a contrasting phrase.  The parallel and contrasting phrases should form a period with the original phrase.  These will be graded.  DUE Wkbk 6.5 the odds.  Write on separate staff paper so you can turn these in for correction.
