CHE-141-Lab Spring 2006

Schedule: This is the schedule for lab experiments. It also contains due dates for lab reports. You should read this schedule to know what you need to prepare for and when you need to prepare for it.

This week:

(4/25 - 5/2)

Identification of unknown compounds. Read the handout for "Unknowns/spectroscopy." For this project, you will be given an unknown compound and run chemical tests to see what functional groups may be present. Then you will get spectral information and propose a structure for the compound. Please refer to the MestreC instructions for obtaining the NMR spectra.

Next Week:

Spectroscopy of unknown compund..

Handouts: (Supplemental material for laboratory excercises and experiments. These are required reading!)

General reading/resources

  • Laboratory Notebooks: guidelines on how to properly keep a record of what you do in lab.
  • Chemistry Resources: A list of resources that will be helpful for looking up physical properties of the compounds you will be using.
  • MestReC instructions: A set of instruction to follow for downloading and processing NMR data on a PC.

Laboratory investigations

Lab report templates: These are the forms that should be used for laboratory reports that you turn in. They are available as either PDF documents or as MSWord documents. Do not fill in the report templates while doing the laboratory excercise. Notebooks are where you record your experimental data.
