Hockey & Coaching

Introduction:
Ice hockey has been a big part of my life for a long time. I joined my first team when I was 10 years old and have been skating ever since. I have devoted so much of my life to hockey it seemed only fitting to devote at least a part of my web site to it. Here you will find an account of my experiences as both a player and instructor. Each season that I played from 1993 through the present, beginning with the most recent season and moving further back in time season by season. At the bottom of the page out can also find a list of skating clinics, camps and off-season leagues I have participated in, in the past.

Coaching Experience:
I have been interested in coaching hockey since high school, when, as a captain of my varsity team, I was able to get my first glimpse of the "behind the scenes" aspects of coaching. At Carleton I was given numerous opportunities to coach and teach hockey and ice skating. I taught both beginning an intermediate ice skating classes for Carleton's Physical Education department from 2003 through 2005. I also taught beginning and intermediate ice hockey in 2005. In both classes I taught students of varying skill levels to skate, stop, turn, crossover, stick-handle and shoot.

At Carleton I was also given the opportunity to coach Carleton's Women's Hockey club team (WHAC). Because the team was club, it had no official coaching staff, so as one of two captains, I took the role of coach. WHAC plays in the Women's Hockey Association of Minnesota's C division. WHAC generally has one or two seasoned players, but mostly consists of beginners. As the captain/coach it was my ob not only to teach new plays, but also to instruct on the basics of skating, stick-handling, and even goal-tending. It was a very enriching experience.

Course Work:
I have taken four college-level academic courses on subjects related to coaching, athletic training, and hockey. These courses are: Sports and Coaching, Women's Hockey Coaching Practicum, Athletic Training I: Gross Human Anatomy and Life Guard Training with Advanced First-Aid, CPR and AED certification.
