Gustavus Adolphus, ranked #2 in the country,
followed up its winning performances on Friday with victories in all
three doubles championships Saturday. This gave them 162 points for
the season and first place overall. St. Thomas came in second with
113 points. St. Olaf scored 16 points in the doubles to finish third
overall, with 109.5 points. Eric Butorac and Kevin Whipple captured
the #1 Doubles title defeating Ted Nagel and Tom Nagel of St. Olaf
8-2. Daryn Collins and Mike Hom defeated Karl Wilbur and Tim Smith
of St. Olaf 8-6. In #3 Doubles, Nick Crossley and Josh Heiden won
8-2 over Tom Loper and John Thomas of St. Thomas to capture the
title. This is the 14th consecutive MIAC title for the Gustavus
Men's Tennis team. Senior Nick Crossley, with his singles win
yesterday, captured his fourth consecutive MIAC singles title in his
career at Gustavus. Next up for the Gustavus Tennis team is the NCAA
Division III Midwest Sub-Regional Tournament held at Gustavus
Adolphus College May 11-12. Also next weekend, the Gustavus Women's
tennis team will host the NCAA Sub-Regional Tournament on Friday and
Saturday.
At this year's championships, Coaches Sarah Hurst and Stephan
Zweifel of Carleton were named MIAC Co-Coaches of the Year. Also,
Gustavus senior Daryn Collins received the 2002 Central Region
Arthur Ashe award for for leadership and academic excellence.
