MCS 358 Grading Guidelines
January 2006
All projects should
- be typed (complex
mathematical formulae may be hand written),
- include
graphs and/or tables where appropriate. These should be consecutively
numbered (i.e. figure 1, figure 2, etc.) so that they can be easily
referred to in the text. Graphs and tables can be included either in
the body of the document or in an appendix. Graphs and tables
should include a short caption (one or two sentences). Axes should
be labeled and keyed if appropriate.
- use
proper spelling, grammar, etc. Yes, you will be graded on this.
- include
citations if outside sources are used.
A C project
- will have a very limited
introduction
- will answer the project
questions,
- will provide minimal
background information,
- relates the
mathematics/statistics to the phenomenon being modeled, and
- has
a cursory conclusion.
A B project
- will have an introduction
that clearly explains the goals and background of the project,
- will answer the questions in
a way that does not require reference to the given assignment,
- clearly states any underlying
assumptions of the model(s),
- discusses the advantages and
limitations of the model(s),
- relates the mathematics/statistics
to the phenomenon being modelled,
- briefly explores possible
extensions to the model(s) and/or the project, and
- provides
a conclusion that clearly summarizes the work.
An A project
- has all the qualities of a B
project, but in addition
- everything in the
presentation and model is directly relevant to the problem and its
solution (i.e. the report is crisp), and
- explores
possible extensions to the model(s) and/or the project in detail.
