• Read sections in appendix A on SETS (pages 471-474) and RELATIONS (pages 489-491).

  Let A = {a,b,c} and let B = {b,c,d}.

  • How many elements are in each of the following sets?
    • A x B
    • A union B
    • A intersect B
  • (Harder) How many relations are there between A and B ? (If you can't count how many, list a few.)
  • How many equivalence relations are there on A ?

• Read section 1.1, What is a graph? through page 6

  • As always, take out a piece of paper and draw a small example of each definition. As with example 1.1.3, whenever possible, compare an example reflecting the formal definition with a drawing.

• Identify which homework problems you are prepared to attack.
