He comes from a legendary background as he is a descendent of the Napoleonic marshal Jean Bernadotte who was eventually was elected prince of Sweden, and is also a grandson of King Oscar II of Sweden and a nephew of King Gustav V. He had an important impact on World War II. As vice chairman of the Swedish Red Cross, he controlled and supervised the exchange of disabled British and German war prisoners. Just before the war ended, he led the rescue operation bringing captured Norwegians, Danes, and western European inmates from German concentration camps to hospitals in Sweden. He helped save approximately 15,000 lives. Then in 1948, the five significant powers of the United Nations Security Council agreed to appoint Bernadotte as mediator to seek peace in the Jewish-Arab conflict in Palestine. He was successful in obtaining agreement to a four week truce on June 11. On September 17, Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem by members of the Stern group.
