Inactive Fraternities

Chi Iota Kappa was founded in 1907 as a forensics society called the Chieftain Council. They were renamed in 1924 to Chi Iota Kappa, but still held on to the nickname “Chieftains.”

Alpha Phi Alpha was founded in 1995 as a Black fraternity hoping to be nationally affiliated, but were canceled after the application to be nationally chartered was rejected.

Epsilon Delta Sigma began in 1916 as the Euphorian Society, but didn’t last long as many students joined Nu Upsilon Gamma because the college officially recognized it as a Fraternity in 1920. Gustavus Adolphus College stated that a student could only belong to one Greek Organization.

Gamma Phi Omega, also knows as the “Gammas” have been around since 1948. They were inactive in the late 1980’s, and in 1994 were revived as a co-ed group. The group came to an end again in 2000.

Kappa Alpha Psi is a Black fraternity with international affiliation; it was only active from 1975-1978.

Kappa Sigma Chi began in 1914 as the Clionian Debating Society. They were nicknamed the “Sons of Clio”. The nickname changed to “Kappa Sigs” or “Sigs” when they were renamed Kappa Sigma in 1920. They have been inactive since 2002.

Omega Kappa began as a debating society known as the Olympian Council in 1906. They were reorganized as a fraternity in 1922 and adopted the Greek name Omega Kappa, with the nickname “OK’s”, which became inactive in 2006.

Psi Kappa Chi was founded in 1983 and became inactive in 2007 after a member failed to turn in required paper work. They carry the nickname “Kappas”.

Tau Kappa was active on campus for a short period from 1967-1970. They are known as the TK’s.

Tau Sigma Theta was founded as a science-orientated society in 1929 but was only active until 1935.
