1980's: ARPANET
expands, NSFNet takes over
- 1980 ARPANET Has 213
hosts. CSNET
(Computer Science NETwork)
connects various CS programs and companies, separate from ARPANET.
- 1981 BITNET network links IBM mainframes
in educational institutions. Gateways built to ARPANET. ListServ
software developed.
- 1982 EUNet (European UNIX Network)
- 1983 ARPANET
split into ARPANET and
MILNET.
- 1986 National
Science Foundation (NSF) funds NSFNet, a cross country
56 kbs backbone for the Internet. (Overhead) Use of term
"Internet" first appears for national network.
- 1987 ARPANET
Has > 10,000 hosts.
- 1988 Robert
Morris, son of a computer security expert for the National
Security Agency, creates first computer
worm. CERT (Computer
Emergency Response Team) formed in response.
- 1989 ARPANET
Has > 100,000 hosts. ARPANET
is de-commissioned (now NSFNet)
